First off, I wanted a poker table that was a little different than usual. I planned out some stuff in my head, and jotted some designs down on paper. However, it wasn't until I began that I realized my designs and plans were MUCH too advanced for my beginner carpenter skills. It was WAY over my head, but as you can see - I still finised with an EXCELLENT product.
Next we will work on the center piece. Take the center oval - the one that you cut the 4" ring off of. Take another 4" ring from the outsite. Keep this aside. It will be used as a guide for the plexiglass. Apply your 1/4" High Density foam to the remaining middle piece. I used spray adhesive - waited a while, then used an electric carving knife to trim off the excess. Check it out:
Put on your velveteen or whatever. Make sure you pull nice and tight so there are no wrinkles. Staple it down and set it aside for now. (SORRY NO PICTURES!!!)
Grab your railing again and take the 2" Foam and apply it the same way you did the middle piece.
Next part is a little trickier. Take your 1/2" Foam and wrap it around your newly padded railing. This step isn't completely necessary, however I wanted some padding on the sides. I had trouble with the glue sticking, so I stapled it down, luckily - the staples cannot be felt.
Next is the vinyl. I SUCK at it so no need for me to explain. As you will see - I had some problems with the corners - MAJOR wrinkle action going on. Like I said - I am a Rookie Carpenter. Check out other sites for vinyl tips!
Okay, set down your newly padding railing (AFTER THE VINYL is applied) right on the other piece of plywood. Remember how we put that little lip on it - so it should just slip right down. Now you can grab your middle piece - and center it. Screw it down and we're ready for the rope lighting!
I would paint the 4" gap between the rail and the center piece white - it helps brighten up the rope lighting. I found this out after I had already laid the rope light. Just a heads up for you. I had to go back and paint. After it's dry, begin laying the rope lighting. I bought a lot of rope lighting so I think I got around like 7 or 8 times!
Next is the plexiglass. THE WORST part of the job. It's a pain to work with. I used a router to cut it and traced it on the 4" ring we set aside from the beginning. After I had a plexiglass ring - I wanted it diffused a bit so I used the "foggy" spray paint that's sold. It worked good.
Getting the plexiglass to fit good was EXTREMELY hard. I had to go back like 50 times and take a little off here or there. FRUSTRATING!!!!! I finally got it to fit snug! I bought some roping from Joanne Fabrics and trimmed it off. I got my legs in the mail and screwed them on - pretty self explanatory. I had to cut off about 4" because it was much too tall - but no problems.
And finally I am DONE!!! Table came out great (especially for my first project EVER!). The plexiglass is great, too - it can be used to stack chips on or even a drink holder! Very cool! Plug it in and you're ready to go!
